Students wishing to do A’ Level Biology must achieve a grade
B (high score) in GCSE Double Award Science. Students will be following
the AQA syllabus for this course.
WHAT YOU WILL BE LEARNING ABOUT
You will be studying at least 3 modules for Advanced Subsidiary
(AS) one of which will be coursework assessment and 3 for Advanced
Level (A2). These modules for AS and A2 include

AIMS
This AS and A’ Level specification encourages candidates
to:
- develop essential knowledge and understanding of concepts of
biology, and the skills needed for the use of these in new and
changing situations;
- develop an understanding of scientific methods;
- be aware of advances in technology, including information technology,
relevant to biology;
- recognise the value and responsible use of biology in society;
- sustain and develop their enjoyment of, and interest in, biology;
- show knowledge and understanding of facts, principles and concepts
from different areas of Biology and to make use of connections
between them.
HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED
The Scheme of Assessment has a modular structure. AS and A2 Biology
comprises 3 units or modules. The first 2 units are assessed by
examination. The third component usually involves some method of
practical examination. Tests are taken at 2 specific times of year
– January and June. The first 2 modules in AS and A2 are assessed
by examination. The third module involves some method of practical
examination.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
A Level Biology provides opportunities to pursue a number of careers
including those in Conservation and Environmental Work, Teaching,
the Police, Medicine, Dental Practice, Catering, Sports, Physiotherapy
and Laboratory occupation.
