GCSE Physical Education gives students an opportunity to gain credit for their physical ability in sports, and to increase their own knowledge and interest in sport by studying many areas of sport to GCSE level.

Apart from the practical side the course is quite scientific requiring good knowledge of the human body, its main body systems and how physical exercise effects them. The course also examines the main social issues affecting sport e.g. drugs in sport and violence in sport.

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

All candidates are assessed by two components:

a) Practical activities assessment within college (60%) to include a written project to plan, implement and evaluate an exercise programme. Practical activities are marked out of 480 and the project is worth 80 marks.

All candidates are assessed on four activities chosen from at least two of the groups below:

  • A two hour written paper (40%)
  • A practical assessment (60%)

Career Opportunities

P.E. is useful for jobs such as teaching, coaching and leisure centre staff. (As a scientific subject it is increasingly recognised as highly as a science GCSE).
