MOTOR VEHICLE AND ROAD USER STUDIES

Northern Ireland GCSE Syllabus

WHAT YOU WILL BE LEARNING ABOUT

Many areas of the road transport system will be covered , these include:

Vehicle control and road user behaviour (includes practical moped training)

Legal requirements

Road transport and its effect on society

Motoring Mathematics

Accident procedures

Motor vehicle technology

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

Written Paper 60%

Practical Riding 20%

Investigative Study 20%

COURSEWORK

There are two components

i) Practical riding which requires the pupils to demonstrate skills of vehicle control (moped).

ii) Investigative study which is concerned with road user behaviour related to a traffic situation to be carried out outside the College.

EXAMINATION

Foundation Tier (C – G)

Consists of 1 paper with 2 parts - A and B

A - multiple choice paper (30minutes)

B - short answer and structured paper (60 minutes)

Higher Tier (A* – D)

Consists of 1 paper with 2 parts - A and B.

A - short answer questions (45 minutes)

B - structured and free response questions (75 minutes)

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The GCSE in Motor Vehicle and Road User studies is accepted by all employers. The qualification can also lead to opportunities in the car industry and related jobs.
