English Literature

AQA GCSE Syllabus

WHAT YOU WILL BE LEARNING ABOUT

The course for English literature will be integrated with that for English. In many cases the same piece of coursework can be submitted for both awards, and the same texts studied.

Students will study six texts :

One each of drama, poetry and prose published before 1914.

One each of drama, poetry and prose published after 1914.

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

There are two tiers of entry:

Foundation tier

Higher tier

Assessment for both tiers is by coursework and examination

Coursework:

Coursework is worth 30% of the total marks.

Three assignments are required: one poetry, one prose, one drama, none of which have been studied for the examination.

Examination:

Examination is worth 70% of the total marks.

The examination will test students on their understanding of one poetry, one prose and one drama text not studied for coursework.

Career Opportunities

English Literature forms a useful foundation for careers in teaching, journalism, publishing, advertising, law, broadcasting, arts administration, librarianship, archive work, marketing, sales and management, as well as developing the skills of critical thinking, communication, organisation, information gathering and analysis, which form a valuable basis for many other careers.
