GCSE Business Studies

Northern Ireland GCSE Syllabus.

WHAT YOU WILL BE LEARNING ABOUT

Business Studies students consider the policies and working practices of business. The topics covered in the course relate to real life situations in the business world.

The course covers the following five main areas:

1. Business: aims, types and organisation.

2. Human Resources.

3. Production.

4. Marketing.

5. Finance.

Students considering this course require a sound knowledge of English, Mathematics and Information Technology.

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

One piece of coursework worth 20% of the total marks.

Two examination papers worth 80%.

Coursework:

Each student completes one assignment of approximately 2500 words. The assignment must be related to a business situation and should incorporate appropriate use of ICT. All candidates are expected to undertake individual research and all assignments must be original.

Examination:

Business Studies examinations are available in two tiers.

1. Students completing the ‘Foundation Tier’ can expect to achieve Grades C-G.

2. Students completing the ‘Higher Tier’ can expect to achieve Grades A*- D. Grade E can be awarded in exceptional circumstances.

Paper 1: Case Study (30%) (1 hour 30 minutes)

Examination questions are based on a seen case study. The case study is delivered to schools from the 1st March for study purposes.

Paper 2: General Paper (50%) (2 hours)
