Youth Sport Basketball Blitz
14 March, 2007

The annual Youth Sport South basketball blitz was held recently in Dungannon Leisure Centre. One hundred and forty children from local primary schools took part in what was a very entertaining and eventful day.

Speaking at the event, Youth Sport South Co-ordinator, Rita McKenna said, “It was evident that the delivery of coaching sessions offered through the Youth Sport South Programme has had a profound effect on the standard of ability shown on the day”. Mrs McKenna went on to thank Ian Burton, Youth Sport South coach and student at Integrated College Dungannon for his hard work and dedication throughout the year which “had brought the children to the level of ability they have achieved. The Youth Sport South Programme has once again given children a fantastic opportunity to progress in a sport, that may not normally be taught in their own school and also to compete in this activity with other schools” added Mrs McKenna.

Awards were presented by Mary Jo Kerr, Youth Sports Development Officer, SELB and Dominic Clarke, PE teacher at Integrated College Dungannon.

Ian Burton, basketball coach then added his “congratulations and thanks to the schools and their teachers for making the day a successful one and to the Leisure Centre for their use of facilities and their support throughout the day.”

The Youth Sport South Programme has also extended to club links in the Dungannon area where a basketball club is now officially open at Dungannon Leisure Centre and offers tuition to all primary 4, 5, 6 and 7 school children on Saturday mornings from 10am to 1pm. Further details about the basketball club may be obtained by telephoning Ian Burton, co-ordinator, on 07843261888 or Dungannon Leisure Centre on 87753252.
