Yr 10 Students Retain Alpha League Netball Title
11 June, 2009

St Catherines 7
ICD 9

The Year 10 girls at Integrated College Dungannon retained the Alpha League title for the third year in a row in a very close encounter with St Catherines Armagh.

The Dungannon girls had to overcome St Patricks Keady in a very close semi-final which even after extra time the two teams could not be separated. The game was decided on a Golden Goal. Luckily for ICD Marcella Janekova was on target within seconds to seal the victory for the Dungannon girls.

The final was always going to be a tough contest with St Catherines which was played in Armagh Leisure Centre. The Dungannon side were first to settle registering the first score. However the Armagh school stuck to their task and never let ICD extend the lead beyond one goal. Solid performances were given in defence by Cassandra Brandao, Joanna Mc Killion and Katie Rice. As the game progressed both teams scored crucial goals to prevent the other team from settling into the game, Marcella Janekova and Chloe Starkey were both on target and kept the Dunganonn girls ahead by the smallest of margins. Scoring opportunities were provided through the continuous efforts from Hollie Templeton and Niamh Mc Elory.
It was not until the final minute of the game that ICD managed to extend their lead by two goals to win the match and retain the league title and shield for a third year in a row.

A special mention must go to Kelly-Louise Mc Kinney who trained and played with the team all year but missed the final due to getting her appendix out.
