ICD Student heads up Youth Sport South Programme at St Mary’s Primary School Carland
23 June, 2010

Young pupils of St Mary's PS, Lisbuoy, Carland who participated in the Youth Sport South Programme under the careful guidance of Zoe Templeton, Head Girl of ICD.

Young pupils at St Mary's Primary School are enjoying participating in sports of their choice not normally provided at primary school.

Having joined the Youth Sport South Programme, children attending St Mary's have been enjoying a 6 week programme of tag rugby for children from all ages. Under the careful supervision of Zoe Templeton, Head Girl at Integrated College Dungannon (ICD), the young pupils have been put through their paces and thoroughly enjoyed an active busy schedule.

St Mary's Primary School, Principal Mrs McAuley praised the Youth Sport South programme, 'Here in St Mary's Primary School (Lisbuoy), Carland, we have introduced after school provision for the first time this school year. It was important to us to cater for pupils across the primary school age range and so, with the help of the SELB Southern Youth Sport Service, it was possible to access coaching from a range of disciplines and to suit all interests. In addition, the coaches that have worked with our pupils have been positive role models, helping the children to see the impact sport can have when played to the highest amateur levels and building their self-confidence as they develop new skills.'

The Youth Sport South Programme began in the Southern Board area in 1999 and has gone from strength to strength with over 25 primary schools participating regularly in activities not normally offered in their own school.

Co-ordinated by Rita McKenna, a PE teacher at ICD, the programme is jointly funded by the SELB and Integrated College Dungannon.'I would like to welcome St Mary's to the Youth Sport South Programme and I am delighted that the school is keen to continue with Youth Sport South in the new academic year. I would also like to congratulate Zoe on her excellent work with the programme this year and on achieving an elite entry to the University of Ulster at Jordanstown, to undertake Sports Studies, where I am sure the wealth of experience gained from working with young pupils from St Mary's, Carland will benefit her greatly'.

Any primary school wishing to participate in the Youth Sport South Programme or to find out further details should contact Rita McKenna at Integrated College Dungannon on 02887724401.
