STEM VISITS

Cogent are a sector skills council. They cover the science based industries in the UK , these being the chemical, nuclear, oil & gas, petroleum and polymer industries. They are responsible for maintaining the National Occupational Standard, writing and reviewing the qualifications for these industries in collaboration with employers, and undertaking research into the current and future status of these industries. They are able to identify skills gaps, and review future employment needs. They use this research and aim to encourage and engage the next generation of employees from the schools throughout the UK.

A Mullin, head of Science at ICD, invited Ms Julia Bennett, from Cogent, to speak to Year 10 on the importance to the economy of these industries and the wonderfully varied and interesting careers that there are. The presentation lasted 20 minutes and included a short quiz. Ms Bennett explained to year 10 the need for more employees in industries and how important the study of science is in developing skills to work in industries. It was a very successful afternoon enjoyed by all.

‘From a student perspective’

The talk we had about different jobs with science was very interesting. It informed us about jobs we had never heard of before and gave us a chance to see what opportunities are available when we leave school. It made us think of jobs that need to be done for us in our everyday lives but we don’t realise that they’re actually being done

Alanna Reynolds (10I)

‘Letter from Ms Julia Bennett’

Dear Ann

Just a quick note to say many thanks for letting me come and speak to your school. I can say hand on heart that they were the most interactive that I met, and when you are speaking that is so nice. I particularly liked the young man at the front who told me I liked telling people what to do, how perceptive!!! I do hope it was of value to them, and please do send me the photos and the article in your newspaper when it comes out, I would love to see them.

If there is any way I can be of further help or the pupils have any questions I can help with, do not hesitate to let me know, and I’ll do my best to help.

Kindest Regards

Cogent Project Manager
