Religious Education

RELIGIOUS STUDIES TEACHER AT ICD AWARDED AN OXFORD FARMINGTON SCHOLARSHIP

The Religious Studies teacher at the Integrated College Dungannon has been awarded a Farmington Scholarship through the Farmington Institute at Oxford.

The Farmington Institute was founded to support, encourage and improve RE in schools, colleges and universities. Mrs Vennard will avail of these opportunities in order to create A level resources for the history of the Irish Church 400 – 700 AD.
The scholarship will commence in September.

Within the Institute at Oxford a selected number of RE teachers are awarded fellowships to undertake research which would be useful in their teaching, and be of help to other teaching.
Mr. Sleeth, the principal of ICD, said “Through awarding teachers prestigious scholarships and enabling them to return to study in a university under a supervisor, it can only but help to build a body of expertise in RE within the teaching profession.
We are delighted that one of our members of staff has been awarded this scholarship and we know it will be of great benefit to not only our A level students but other students in schools who undertake the study of the Irish Church.”

Frequently Asked Questions

KS3

GCSE

What is the requirement to take RE at the College?

In years 11 & 12 everyone gets the opportunity to study RE. They may choose one of the following courses.

    • GCSE Full Course
    • GCSE Short Course
    • COA Entry Level
    • Non Examined RE

What’s the difference between the GCSE Short Course and the Full Course?

The Short Course is shorter! – It’s taken on 2 periods per week – the Full Course has 4 periods per week. Both courses are GCSEs and will appear on your GCSE certificate alongside your other subjects.

Do I have to be ‘religious’ to take the course?

In a word – No! It’s more important that you are intrigued to study religious communities in all their complex reality and are interested in finding out why Christians believe in what they do.

What will I study in RE?

Both courses follow a similar core. There are four sections to each course:

    • A study of world religions.
    • The teachings of Jesus.
    • The beliefs and practices of the Christian Churches today.
    • Moral issues examined from a Christian perspective.

What can I expect?

Class-discussions, videos, role-plays and group-work. Be prepared to express your own opinions and listen to other people’s points of view.

'A' Level

What GCSEs do I need to take ‘A’ level RE?

No particular GCSEs are required – it’s not necessary to have taken the Full- Course at GCSE.

What about GCSE Grades?

Good grades in subjects such as RE, English, and History would be a good indicator of your ability to study RE at ‘A’ level.

What can be done with a RE qualification?

RS is accepted by the leading universities as a valid entrance qualification…….including medicine and dentistry (plus the obvious sciences…of course!).

Students who have taken RS have gone on to careers in social-work; retailing; nursing; banking; law…….not forgetting teaching and religious leadership!

What’s on the ‘A’ level Course?

We study modules in Acts of the Apostles and the history of the Celtic church.
